Good Morning!

The sun is out and the birds are singing – but there’s SNOW on the ground!  Oh well.
A few weeks ago our neighbor brought over a bag of Amish Friendship Bread starter.  You know – the ten day routine – stir with a wooden spoon, add flour, milk & sugar, etc.  The first round of bread/muffins that I made were okay, but not the greatest.  Oh, did I mention the starter didn’t come with a recipe?  I found a few online, but the one I made did not have much flavor.
Sooo, my mom dug up an old (and I do mean old) stack of recipes that used the same starter. Instead of being called “Amish Friendship Bread” the starter is called “Herman.”  On the days that you are supposed to add ingredients, it says “feed Herman one cup of flour, milk and sugar.”  A fun activity for kids.
Anyway, in this stack of recipes for Herman I found a yummy coffee cake recipe.

Herman Coffee Cake
1 cup Herman
1 cup flour
¾ teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
½ cup sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/3 cup oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup of butter, softened

Combine ingredients, pour into greased 8×8 pan. Sprinkle topping over batter. Any chopped dried frust or fresh apples may be added. Bake at 350 until toothpick comes out clean!
